MMA-MSS National Service Project: "Healthy Lifestyles to Reduce Obesity"
October '06 - 'Succeeding in Medical School' Event: We held this event at Trocaderos Nightclub. It was very informative and a great chance for all of us to get together. We had a good turnout and the speakers were great!
Med School Activities Fair: Our table was a success and we had a great time meeting everyone.
August '06 - AMA Picnic: It was well-attended and a great time for all.
Once every two years, the AMA-MSS chooses a new National Service Project (NSP) around which we focus our community service activities for the following two years. The MSS is pleased to announce that Covering the Uninsured and Protecting Access to Care was selected for 2006-2008. In the next two years, America will be forced to confront the failings in our health care system. As the future of medicine, we should lead the call for change with our service and advocacy.
Background
At the MSS Annual Meeting in 1998, Resolution 16, "Creating a Community Service Project," was passed by the Assembly. This resolution asked that the AMA-MSS undertake a limited local service project as part of its agenda at its annual meeting, at a time determined by Governing Council, as appropriate based on the schedule of activities.Previous National Service Projects include organ and tissue donor awareness; Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP); "No Butts About It...Tobacco Stinks!"; and most recently, Healthy Lifestyles to Reduce Obesity. At our national Annual and Interim Meetings, the MSS organizes events in the community that focus on our NSP, such as health fairs and programs at local elementary schools. The goal of these projects is to provide students with the idea and structure so that you can replicate them in your own communities.
