What is Internal Medicine?
Doctors of internal medicine (IM), often called
"internists," focus on adult medicine. Internists have had special
study and training that focuses on the prevention and treatment of
adult diseases. The IM residency is three years long. After residency,
about half choose to go on to further specialize. The IM
sub-specialties include Adolescent Medicine, Allergy/Immunology,
Cardiology, Critical Care, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Endocrinology,
Hematology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Oncology, Pulmonology,
Rheumatology, and Sports Medicine.

What is IMIG?
We are the Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) at
the University of Minnesota Medical School. We are mostly pre-clinical
students who want to learn more about the practice of IM and the career
possibilities.
We also have a strong interest in Evidence-Based
Medicine. EBM's ultimate application is at the level of the individual
clinician's decisions about managing patients.

How can I learn more about
Internal Medicine?
First, you can join our IMIG mailing list to stay informed
about our activities.
Second, you can join the American College of Physicians
(ACP). ACP is the nation's largest medical specialty society and offers
numerous resources to students (mostly for free). IMIG is grateful for
our strong relationship with our local ACP chapter, who offer numerous
opportunities for medical students and generously support our efforts.
